The St. Michael Rodeo team was formed by Terri Deville, former SMHS parent, during the summer of 2010. The rodeo team began competition in the fall of 2010. The first rodeo “team” members were Brooke Barber, Rachel Deville, Jamie Moran and Sami Sylvester. These young ladies were members of the Louisiana High School Rodeo Association and they competed in the barrel racing, pole bending and goat tying events. Two of the first four students went on to qualify for the National High School Finals rodeo held in Gillette, Wyoming.

The regular rodeo season starts in September and wraps up in late April with only a short winter break. The state finals are held in June and the national finals are held in July. Currently, at the state finals students are awarded over $25,000 in scholarships and at the national finals the students are awarded over $1,000,000 in scholarships. In addition to the scholarships, saddles, buckles and other prizes are awarded. Thus, many students go on to compete in the professional ranks. All learn the importance of education, good sportsmanship, animal welfare and the need to become good leaders and successful, productive citizens.
